Training Tips:

1) Clicker training is a fabulous way to train and it really is a quick way to "communicate".
2) The easiest and first thing I train is the SIT, then the DOWN, and WAIT.
3) When training keep your voice happy but not too exuberant, especially when training new things. Our tendancies are to get really excited when they are doing something really well then our voices change and they lose their concentration and the moment is gone.
4) ALWAYS end on a good note. Find something they can do and end it on that, even if it is something small.
5) Remember you are a team but YOU are the "leader", always be consistent and fair.
6) More tips coming ! Be sure to check out our FUN PHOTOS page to get an idea of what training can lead to!
7) When you first start training, training sessions will be very short. As they learn more, the length of the sessions will increase. Be sure you stop with your dog wanting to do more so it doesn't get bored. Both you and your dog will then look forward with eagerness to your next session.

Dog looks at it (plastic container lid) "click'n treat"; dog touches with his/her nose "click'n treat… soon you will be able to move the object that you have been touching up, down, from side to side, and they will touch it.

Another thing you can do is "send your" dog to the plastic lid. FIRST have the dog sit. Then place the lid with their treat on it in front of him/her and say, "get it". When the dog gets it "click'n treat". Progress to further away from you and continue to say "get it" and "click'n treat". I click as the dog gets the goody and run up and add more goodies to the lid for the dog to get, making that target "important" in the dogs mind. Just a few repetitions are all you need to do in any one lesson.

TRAIN ALONG WITH ME - "Target Training"

Target training is a very useful tool in training. It can get your dog where you want it to go or to execute something specific. You can have your dog "touch" a lid off of a plastic container (margarine, cool whip, etc.), a dowel, or even your finger. So, get those "clicker's" out and train along with me!

Try adding a "wait" (or if you prefer, "stay"), then say "Ready" - (pause) then say "GO get it". Be sure to click'n treat as your dog eats the treat! You are teaching several things here.. you are working with the Sit, Wait/Stay and GO commands.

Training is done in steps and these steps are your building blocks to the next "level UP". Once your dog "gets" certain behaviors then they can be expanded upon leading up to the most incredible performances of tricks jobs or whatever you wish them to do!
